5 Rituals for this New Moon - Rosh Hodesh Tishrey - Rosh Hashana

Updated: Oct 2

This new moon is special as we are actually starting a new year cycle, it is Rosh Hashana! It is no secret that the moon is influencing us, thanks to the moon we have seasons and tides, but it also has an impact on us, especially women that have hormonal monthly cycles.

In order to be more present and understand ourselves deeply, taking the time to stop and feel this cyclicality is crucial. It enables us to feel our balance through our different layers: our physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and even astral bodies.

A ritual is actually a space-time entity that you create in a sacred way, which means with mindfulness, respect and kindness, in which you are fully and truly yourself. It is safe, and it is yours. Its purpose is to connect, you and yourself, or you and something greater whatever you believe in. Its way of use is to discharge and charge - letting go of what is not serving us anymore, setting intentions to manifest the reality we would like to create. You can take some inspiration or replicate those rituals that I will list and explain now, the choice is yours.

1. Yearly Introspection Exercice

The month of Elul is coming to an end, it was the month of "Heshbon Nefesh", self introspection (more info about Elul in my last post). If you did not take the time to do that, or even if you did, you can start your ritual by journaling, to highlight the end of this Elul introspection time. A very nice exercice is to write each month and then the first memory or feeling that pops up into your mind. First it is a great memory exercice, second it will help you to make your introspection, and third it will make you realise how many things have happened and motivate you to continue on the incredible path you are on!

September - November - December - January - February - March - April - May - June - July - August - Now

When you arrive at the "Now", you can start to write about a deeper introspection. Here are subjects and questions you can write on, no need to write a novel, just write the first things that come up to your mind, without judging:

  1. From this past year, I am grateful for...

  2. The most important thing(s) to me about this past year is...

  3. From all the memories of this past year I feel... (focus on your emotions)

  4. From this past year I feel sorry about...

  5. What brought me the most joy last year was...

If you want to go deeper, you can do it with the years, and ask yourself the same questions asking "from this life", I am grateful for...

Another great journaling exercice is to write who you think you are, and whatever are the titles and adjectives you write on, you slowly understand that you are so much more, and can become whoever you want, you can spot where are your limiting believes about yourself. Being aware of them is the first step.

2. Letting go, discharging

Letting go of limiting beliefs or what is no longer serving us is key to start a new cycle fresh!

But there are many ways to let go, and letting go is deeper when it is physical, when it go through a physical action. For instance on a daily basis going to the toilets or taking a shower are natural ways to let go, physically but also in all the layers of our body - emotional, mental, spiritual... Any physical reality is the expression of an invisible spiritual essence.

You can decide to journal again about what you want to let go, and then throw or burn the paper, it is indeed a nice relieving ritual.

Alchemists had stones at the entrance of sacred places to discharge their energy.

In Judaism we talk about the concept of "Tum'a" that is wrongly translated into "impure". It is in fact simply expressing the concept of death, the non creating, the passivity. The opposite is "Tahara" from the root "Or" the light, which is creation, movement, life. For instance, a dead body, a body without a soul "neshama", is Tuma. It is a reality that has an end, whereas Tahara is an infinite life and cycles reality. We want to disconnect ourselves from anything that puts us in the Tuma reality, in which we have dead ends, we cannot evolve and grow, where there is death and passivity. To cleanse ourselves from Tuma, we must go through a water ritual. Water is the ultimate symbol of life, it contains the memory of everything, and therefore it recalls us what is the true essence of life. In Judaism, you can dip yourself in the "mikve", the ritual bath, or into simply into the sea. Completely naked, as a new born. 3 dips from head to toes, as 3 is the number to go back to unity.

You can also simply go to ocean and pray. If you have a singing bowl, you can put water inside it and rinse your body with it.

You can also chose other action and movement work, for instance Qi Qong or Ecstatic Dance !

3. Intentions for the New Cycle

Intention settings is very popular, it is much powerful than positive affirmations or a simple list of goals. Intentions are about putting yourself in a specific mindset, a specific frequency. Frequencies are like radio channels, the music is here all around you but if you are not on the right channel you won't hear it. It is a matter of choice. An intention is like a wish, it does not make any pressure that could destroy our efforts, it is not judgmental.

I recommend to do first a meditation, I created this sound healing and guided meditation audio for you specially for the occasion, you can find it here: Find your Balance and Alignement

At the end of the recording, I am giving guidance about the intention settings. To cultivate loving-kindness and elevate ourselves to the highest frequencies of wellness, include the people that you care about into this intention.

A great question to ask yourself as well is "how and where is my energy best used?" or in other words "where can I be of greatest service?" I love the Japanese concept of the Ikigay, you can take it as a great journaling exercice and I think this could be great to help you answer this question. I also recommend the book "Ikigay" that reveals the secrets of the world blue zones, where the people live the longest happy lives.

4. Jewish customs and rituals for Rosh Hashana

There are meaningful customs in the judaic tradition for this time of the year: for instance attend the selichot and hear the shofar.

One interpretation of the Shofar symbol is the expression of what is inside, we blow our air into the shofar creating a sound heard by all - it is the divine breath, the verb of creation, the divine sparkle that lives within us. We won't be judge only by our appearance, our shell "klipa", our matter, we externalize what is inside to show it. The Throat chakra meditation can be also a great meditation for that point, tap here to check it out!

Anyway, it is a lot about being all together, coming back to our roots and who we are.

5. Learn about Astrology

This is a great tool to give us food for thoughts and reflect on ourselves. But remember that they are just tools, we shouldn't look for who we are, who we are is an infinite mystery that we are discovering slowly from within.

This month is ruled by the sign of Libra. Libra is a masculin air cardinal sign.

Air is about talking, anylizing, being logical. Cardinal is about being ambitious, stimulating the energy to initiate a project, not letting yourself be influenced.

Libra, even though it is a masculine sign, is ruled by the feminine planet of Venus, which is about relationships, to open yourself to others, to understand the other in its globality, without falling into extra sensitivity. Through the other we can also understand ourselves, as the other is a mirror, what he/she does trigger us in some ways, through the other we discover ourselves.

Once again the throat chakra meditation can be a great exercise to develop our communication and self expression, check it out here!

With one of the most paradoxical sign of the astrology, this month calls us to focus on simplicity, to approach things with a simple mindset, letting go of the "what-if" scenarios, of any passivity/aggressiveness, to make simple choices, to be calm and soothing.

September also brings the automnal equinox. It has a great balancing energy (Libra in latin is translated as balance). Indeed, an Equinox is the point when the sun crosses the equator, when day and night are in equal balance. The balance of the opposites, the feminine and masculine, the alchemist's Sulfure and Mercury. It is another proof showing us that this is a great time to have a ritual and balance ourselves, find our alignment. Meditating with the audio I created is a great way to do just that!

Also, Jupiter, the planet of expansion, opportunity, and abundance is very active under this New Moon. It allows us to see things with a greater clarity and higher perspective.
